It is interesting to note the increase in positive coverage on the supposed beginning of the economic recovery. Even the media which relies on fear and bad news to sell advertising has started to shift emphasis slightly. Did you really think that newspapers and television news are in the business of supplying information? The way to sell newspapers or to get people watching the television news is to instill a sense of impending doom so you have to read or watch in case you miss something terribly important to your future. Witness the hysteria surrounding first Avian flu, then swine flu, economic crises, oil prices, foreclosures, tumbling dollar values and then throw in a particularly nasty incident of violence against innocents. So, one would think that if the media is talking up a recovery then surely it must be true.
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but there will be another huge crisis in 2010 when the next round of US mortgages come up for interest rate adjustment. This is what caused the original meltdown and the next round is due to be even bigger. The business environment is going to be tough for a while yet.
I notice in my own city the amount of vacant commercial space which used to be leased by businesses hit the hardest by the downturn. Finance, real estate, advertising and marketing, property development, retail and many others are no longer in existence. Floor after floor of the large commercial properties are vacant with no sign of any new ventures wanting to take over the leases.
The human side of this tragic situation is reflected in the number of professional and skilled people who have found themselves redundant or out of a job. The impact on families, relationships, mental health is immeasurable. How many people do you know who have lost their job or have had to accept less remuneration to help keep a position? The numbers are scary.
I was in a very similar position. My job was about to be wound up, my wife was made redundant and times were getting desperate. After applying for countless jobs without success we decided to think laterally. We discovered the only industry which has achieved phenomenal growth despite the tough times. This industry is internet marketing. There are a billion and a half internet users globally and the smart money has already recognized the potential market this represents. This is probably the only industry where you can train as a marketer and be generating a sizable income within six months if you find the right business and marketing system. Compare that to becoming a professional in any other area. A 3 - 7 year course of study at a University and a substantial student loan followed by a period of several years on relatively low pay.
A home based internet business has almost zero overheads, no employees, a nominal setup cost and you have the flexibility to work when and how you want. Do you have a laptop and a phone? You are ready to get started. There is no commute, no office politics and most of all no anxiety about the financial health of the company you work for. You are a business owner in the biggest growth industry on the planet and you are one of the fortunate people who can ignore the negative news about the state of the global economy. Welcome to the future!
